The people that Don works with have taken great care to ensure that we have a social life and adjust to being here in SLP. A few weekends ago, Don’s colleague invited us out for dinner. All we knew was that we were being picked up at 9:00 (!!!) at night and it was casual. For those that don’t know about the meal schedule here in Mexico, 9:00PM is a normal time to go out for dinner. However if you’re not a night owl this can be a problem. My first thought was: Holy Crap! I usually go to bed by 10:30!! How am I going to stay up that late? The solution: a nap at around 3PM and a round of double shot espressos at 8:45.
We went to La Malquerida (which loosely translates to the Poor Dear) which is a restaurant that turns into a bar later in the evening. The restaurant serves up excellent “arrachera”, which is a grilled marinated flank steak. It’s a specialty in Mexico they do it very well.
After dinner, there were three bands set to play, a pop band, a Norteño band and a Mariachi band. I was OK with the pop band and the Mariachi but I really can’t stand Norteño music, it’s like a mix between country and polka. It’s like nails on the chalkboard for me. Fortunately for us, the Norteño band didn’t show up so we got to watch the pop and Mariachi band.

The pop band was really fun, they sang everything from Erasure to Maná. It was the perfect mix for us. The Mariachi band was really fun too. At one point, one of the singers was riding around on one of those broomstick horses it was quite a sight to see.
On the whole, the evening was really fun and with my nap and espresso, I was able to stay up until 2AM, which is pretty close to a miracle for me!
